Roderich sighed as he left the hotel in which he and the other countries were staying. Another conference was slowly coming to an end and with more problems than before the personification of Austria was exhausted. He really missed his piano. Making music always relaxed him, but the hotel had no instruments and he was mostly unfamiliar with this city. So he opted to talk a walk, away from the other countries, alone. Maybe thinking of classical music  would be enough to calm down.
The streets and trees were still wet from the recent rain that had stopped about half an hour ago. But the air was cleaner and as Roderich chose his path through a nearby park, he thought he heard a melody from a music box.
The more he walked, the cleaner the sound went and the more intricate he found the melody.
Finally he came upon the source. A young woman with (h/c) hair, a wet umbrella leaning on the bench on which she sat. In her hands was a small wooden box from which the melody came. Her eyes were closed and her head bent down, as if looking upon the box.
Roderich slowly walked closer, not wanting to disturb her. He found himself becoming curious. He never heard that melody before and the sound was so clean, so pure though the wooden boy seemed worn.
He was surprised when she raised her head and a (e/c) gaze met his violet one. She smiled softly at him before returning her gaze to the music box.
“Good Afternoon.” he greeted softly and she looked at him again, curiosity in her (e/c) eyes, which made him blush. Then she smiled again and Roderich felt himself smile in response. She hadn't said a word yet, but there was a connection between them.
She seemed to feel that connection too and made a bit more room, so he could sit down too, on the space being held dry by her umbrella before.
They shared the silence, only ruptured by the still playing music box for the next hour. When the sun slowly set, she gently closed the box and the melody stopped. When she stood and took her umbrella, he stood too.
Smiling gently, she bowed slightly and cocked her head when he talked.
“Danke. I enjoyed this last hour.”
Her smile widened and she chuckled, before inclining her head. Then she turned and walked away.

The next day he went to the park around the same time, wishing to see her again. And to his delight, she sat on the same bench, listening to the same music box.
“Good Afternoon.” he greeted again and was met with her gentle smile. Once more, he sat down next to her and they shared the melody and silence.
Roderich wondered a bit why she wasn't talking to him, but put it away. He understood her without any words and somehow felt like the connection would be disrupted by any unnecessary words. Her silence was soothing, a good opposite to the always talking and fighting countries he experienced at this conference.
She once more closed the music box as the sun set and stood.
“Danke.” he said once more. He really enjoyed her company and wanted her to know that.
She smiled at him beautifully and put her right open, flat hand against her chin before lowering it, the fingers pointing at him, but still open and relaxed. Then she turned around and walked away.
As he walked back to the hotel, he became aware of what that motion had meant. It had been sign language for 'thank you' or 'you are welcome'.  That made him think on the possibility of her being mute.

.

Their encounter went like that for the next few days, until the last day of the conference. Roderich was determined that today he would ask for her name and contact data. He wanted to see her again.
But she wasn't there. No music box, no young woman. Nothing. But then he heard a male voice, talking loudly not far away.
“You're still carrying that old music box around? Quit being a fool, (name).”
Roderich took the path around the corner and was met with the sight of his companion and a young man with similar appearance.
“And why are you even here in the park? It's dangerous. Do you just sit around uselessly? You could make better use of your time.”
Roderich stepped closer, determined to rescue the young woman who looked entirely uncomfortable.
“Hello.” he greeted gently and smiled warmly as she seemed to lighten up.
She waved at him and the opinion that she was mute was strengthened.
“Hello.” The man beside her greeted between pressed teeth. “Who are you, if I may ask?”
“My name is Roderich Edelstein. I met this lovely lady the last few days here in the park and was simply worried when I heard loud talking just now.”
The man seemed to calm down a bit at his explanation. “Thank you for looking out for my sister then. My name is (brother's name) (last name), and this is my sister (name). She was born mute and I take care of her.”
She pouted slightly and Roderich spoke what she thought. “I believe she can probably take care of herself.”
The Austrian was rewarded with a warm smile, which made his blood run faster.
But her brother frowned. “Maybe. But I don't want to risk it.”
“May I ask about the music box, Miss (name)? It has a wonderful melody I have never heard before.” Roderich smiled, his violet eyes warm. He wanted to get to know her better.
“It was our Grandma's. She died recently.” her brother said, frowning a bit. “Grandma loved music.”
(name) smiled just a tiny bit. She seemed a bit left out since her brother talked for her.
Roderich smiled apologetically and rubbed a fist in circles along his chest.
She seemed surprised at the gesture, but told him 'thank you' in sign language. He after all had just told her that he was sorry for her loss.
Her brother watched them converse silently, respectfully staying silent.
In the end, Roderich respectfully asked for her contact information, 'saying' he wanted to stay in contact with such an amazing, lovely lady.
She had smiled and before her brother could object given him her contact data.

-

Years later Roderich sat in his study, working on some country politics, when he heard a familiar melody from the bedroom.
Walking down the hallway slowly, he watched his pregnant wife sitting in bed, listening to the music box that had been the cause of their first meet with a warm smile.
I think the concept of being mute is interesting. So... I made this oneshot. Music is very important to me and I really like the idea that two persons get together because of it.

So... here's a little sweet oneshot :)
Enjoy!
